5 Energy-Saving Tips for Your Apartment

Saving energy not only helps the environment, but it also helps save you money on your hydro bill. If want to cut back your energy consumption, we’ve got five energy saving ideas for your Alberta apartment.

Cut back your consumption of energy by turning off electronics when not in use. Devices that have a standby mode will continue to pull energy when they’re turned off. A smart power bar will detect when a device is in stand-by mode and cut the power off and eliminating access to power.

Smart home devices can help you schedule when you want power to each outlet and help you control your power usage. Popular smart home hubs include the Google Home, the Amazon Echo, and the Apple HomePod. With these you can control power to outlets, schedule when your lights turn on and off, and even control your robotic vacuum.

Change your light bulbs from incandescent or CFL bulbs to LED to help eliminate wasted energy. LED bulbs are longer lasting and give off a more energy efficient light. Philips makes a variety of smart lighting options that allow you to control colour, function, and power.

Cook more efficiently by choosing the smallest pot you need and always use the lid to trap in the heat. Slow cookers generate approximately 50% less energy than the stove and can cook an entire meal while you’re at work or play. The microwave also uses less energy and can be a big help when you’re trying to reduce energy consumption.

Remember poor apartment maintenance can lead to energy waste. If your windows let in a draft, contact your property manager to have the caulking checked. In the meantime, roll up a towel to place in front of the window to stop air from coming in or seeping out. Does your oven take a long time to heat up or does it seem like your fridge is always running? Call your property manager for a maintenance request as these little things waste energy.

If you’ve made changes but still notice high electricity bills, it might be time to consider moving to a more energy efficient apartment in Alberta
