How to Co-exist When Living with a Roommate

Living with a roommate can be one of the best experiences in your life. But it is a big adjustment, especially if you’ve never had a roommate before.

A roommate relationship is built on mutual respect and understanding. You don’t need to be friends, have similar likes and dislikes, but you will need to get along easily. Communication is key to a successful relationship. Before moving in together, discuss what items will be shared, how you’ll deal with groceries, toiletries, and chores. Make ground rules regarding friends, overnight guests, and share costs equally by using an app to divide all one-time costs and monthly bills

Don’t expect your roommate to always wash the dishes or clean the bathroom. Avoid arguments by dividing household chores equally. Create a rotating schedule so no one gets stuck doing the same chores all the time. If you or your roommate slack off on your half of the chores, be considerate and work it out before anyone gets angry.

No one wants to have to tip toe around their own apartment. Look for a roommate who has a similar schedule as yourself. Work out a bathroom schedule for the times you’ll both need to be up and ready to go at the same time. Be considerate to each other’s needs: don’t bring home friends during quiet time, hit the snooze button repeatedly, or play loud music.

When you live with a roommate, remember it’s not necessary to spend all your time together. While the apartment is a shared space, your bedroom is yours alone. Take time for yourself by retreating to your room to read, watch a movie, or listen to your favourite music. Invest in a quality set of headphones or keep noise to a respectful level.

All relationships take time and effort, learn to compromise and work problems out before they become an issue. Don’t stress the small stuff, be open to expressing your feelings, and talk to each other when something is bothering you.
