Turn Your Rental Into a Smart Home

Transforming your living space into a Smart Home comes with many benefits.

Home automation can save you time, help you feel more secure, and assist your organization. And the best part is, Home Automation can be done whether you rent or own your home.

If you’re a renter, it’s important to always ask your landlord before making major modifications. Never tamper with the smoke alarms, locks, or appliances without written consent from your landlord. Most, if not all, home automation devices are portable and can be taken with you if you move.

To start, you’ll want a voice activated hub. The most popular devices are the Google Home, the Amazon Echo, and the Apple HomePod. Each of these hubs come in a variety of sizes and capabilities to fit seamlessly into your living space.

Before you decide on a hub, review all the companion devices available. This will help you determine which unit will best suit your needs. Many people choose a unit based on their cellphone operating system for smooth syncing.

Setting up companion devices is fairly simple. There’s a variety of different options to choose from. Smart plugs can help you control power to small appliances, lamps, or anything you want to plug in. Most smart plugs just need to be inserted into an outlet and connected with your hub. Using a smart plug can also reduce your electricity consumption due to their programmability.

Another popular add-on is smart bulbs. Philips makes a variety of smart lighting options compatible with all operating systems and hubs. With their smart lighting system, you can control power, colour, and functionalities. This system also allows scheduling when the lights turn on and off. Philips Hue comes with a hub to control the lights. This device can be connected to your home hub for voice activation.

Other add-ons include smart doorbells, video camera security, thermostats, and even the iRobot vacuum. Remember all major changes including locks, thermostats, and sensors must be approved by your landlord before installing.

These automated devices will work seamlessly within any rental property. If you’re looking for a new home, we’ve got rentals available throughout Alberta.
