Summer on a Budget: How to Vacation Without Leaving Edmonton

Summer in Edmonton is a beautiful thing. With long, sunny days and an abundance of green space, it’s the perfect season to unwind, without booking a flight or draining your savings. Maybe it’s time to consider planning a staycation for a fun and affordable way to experience the city. We’ve come up with a few ways on how you can enjoy your vacation days without leaving Edmonton, while still feeling like you’ve had a refreshing summer escape.

Discover Local Parks and Trails

Edmonton is home to one of North America’s largest urban park systems. The River Valley alone offers over 160 km of trails, making it ideal for walking, biking, or picnicking. Explore parks like Rundle Park, or Gold Bar Park. Many of these areas offer amenities like paddle boat rentals, picnic sites, and public washrooms.

Pro tip: Pack a picnic and a Frisbee for an all-day family outing that feels like a mini getaway.

Explore Local Festivals and Events

Summer in Edmonton is festival season. From K-Days and Taste of Edmonton to the Edmonton International Street Performers Festival, there’s no shortage of free or low-cost entertainment around the city. Check out the City of Edmonton’s Festivals and Events calendar to keep up with what’s happening in the city this summer.

If you're newly renting in Edmonton, these festivals are also a great way to meet people and get to know your neighbourhood.

Cool Off with a Splash

Bring the kids to a local splash pad to beat the heat. The City of Edmonton operates a variety of free outdoor spray parks and splash pads throughout the summer months. Locations like Jackie Parker Park or Castle Downs Spray Park are perfect for young families. For those humid, rainy days, a trip to World Waterpark at West Edmonton Mall is a great way to make a splash and cool down indoors.

If you’re looking for a more laid-back experience, visit Accidental Beach on the North Saskatchewan River or lounge with a cold drink at one of the city’s many riverside cafes.

Camp in Your Backyard

If you’re craving a camping experience but don’t want the hassle of booking a site and travelling, set up a backyard or indoor camping adventure. Pitch a tent outside or build a blanket fort inside, complete with sleeping bags, board games, and camp-style meals. Roast marshmallows over a portable firepit (where permitted) or toast them in the oven for that gooey treat. This is an especially fun and budget-friendly activity for families with young kids.

Take a Culinary Staycation

Edmonton is a multicultural city with some excellent local eateries. Plan a food-themed staycation and “travel” through different cuisines by dining at local restaurants or exploring international supermarkets to cook something new at home.

Some neighbourhoods like Old Strathcona, Downtown, or Chinatown are perfect for an evening of casual dining and walking around to explore murals, shops, and patios.

Visit Museums and Galleries

For a change of pace, spend an afternoon at local cultural spots like the Art Gallery of Alberta, Telus World of Science, or Fort Edmonton Park. Some of these venues even offer discounted or free admission days. Museums are a great way to explore the city’s history and enrich your summer with experiences that educate as well as entertain.

A memorable summer doesn’t require a plane ticket or a big budget. Edmonton offers countless ways to relax, explore, and have fun close to home. Plus, you won’t need to worry about vacation-proofing your rental or arranging for someone to check in while you’re away— everything you need is right here at home.
