More than Books, Explore the Benefits of your Public Library

Libraries have gone beyond a place to borrow books to bring communities together in music, art, literature, and resources. Your library is a place communities can grow, explore, and share. This October 15th is Love Your Library Day; so, show your love by visiting your local branch today.

There are over 300 library locations across Alberta. The Calgary Public Library alone has 21 branch locations and is the second most used library system in Canada. If you’re new to the area, the library is the perfect place to get to know a city, meet community members, and find others with similar interests.

Libraries today loan audio books, large-print books, DVDs, Blu-Rays, CDs, magazines, graphic novels, and more. Your library card also gives you access to digital library collections for ebooks, audiobooks, and magazines. The libraries in Calgary, Edmonton, Spruce Grove, and Fort Saskatchewan all participate in the inter-library loan system, which means if you can’t find an item at your local library, you can request it from any branch within the province.

Get creative at your public library. All branches have programs and events for kids, teens, adults, and seniors. Visit the makerspace at the Edmonton Public Library to really get creative. Print 3D objects, cut vinyl for décor, record music, create customized clothing with a heat press, or refresh your media with their digital conversion station. Libraries in Calgary, Spruce Grove, and Fort Saskatchewan loan out sewing machines, craft kits, ghost hunting kits, and even a blue/green screen.

No computer? No problem! Accessing the digital world is easy at the library. Patrons can access the internet, use desktop computers, or use WiFi for free. You’ll also find most branches loan Chromebooks, Raspberry Pi Computer kits, digital cameras, and WiFi hotspots.

When you join the library, you gain access to thousands of materials, helpful services, and fun programs. Pop into a branch near you with photo ID to get your library card today or request a library card from their website and start enjoying all the benefits your library can offer.
