Outdoor Skating in Edmonton

Outdoor skating is a wonderful pastime for families, couples, and individuals looking to enjoy the fresh winter air. Skating outdoors in Edmonton is free for all and most rinks are open from 9am to 10pm daily.

For residents of our Castle Downs family rental, there’s a large oval outdoor skating rink at Castle Downs Park just minutes away. Here you’ll find additional rinks for hockey, washrooms for public use, and benches for changing into your skates. This rink is large enough to enjoy as a family while also keeping a distance from other skaters.

The Edmonton City Hall water fountain transforms into a large rectangular skating rink during the winter. Maintained regularly by the city, this free outdoor rink in Edmonton’s downtown core has several long benches and public washrooms available. Access this rink from our rental at Parliament Plaza via transit or by car.

Jackie Parker Park is a beautiful park with a large pavilion and during the winter months, a large ice rink. There are washrooms and outdoor changing spaces available, but due to health and safety reasons, indoor change rooms are closed. Jackie Parker Park is about 15 minutes from our rental at Ridgewood Gardens.

Our residents renting on Silver Berry Road are right around the corner from the Meadows Outdoor Leisure Ice rink, open from 8:30am to 10:30pm daily. Washrooms are available and an indoor changing area is open.

Exploring a park while on a pair of skates is a fun and engaging experience. Here in Edmonton, there’re two parks with 2km of ice trails winding throughout. Called Iceways, these meandering rinks wind through treed areas and are creatively lit up. Iceways are perfect for date night, but fun for families too. Visit the Victoria Park Iceway skating trail, minutes from our rental at Meridian Plaza, or the Rundle Park Iceway just minutes from our rental on 95 Street.  There also are picnic shelters, benches, and warming stations available at both.

Remember winter ice skating is only safe when the ice is solid; obey all posted signs. Check the city’s website for current ice conditions and hours of operation before heading out.
