What to Know Before Moving in the Summer

Summer is one of the busiest seasons for moving, and for good reason. With longer daylight hours, warmer weather, and the end of the school year, it’s an ideal time for many to relocate. But a summer move comes with its own set of challenges and considerations. Whether you're moving into a rental property in Edmonton or surrounding areas, here’s what you should know before making your move.

Plan Early to Avoid the Rush

Summer is peak moving season, which means moving companies, truck rentals, and even elevator bookings in condos fill up quickly. Start your planning early—ideally 6-8 weeks ahead of your move date. Book your movers or rental vehicle as soon as possible to secure your preferred date and avoid last-minute stress.

Be Prepared for Higher Costs

With increased demand comes increased prices. Summer rates for movers and truck rentals are often higher than at other times of the year. Try to be flexible with your moving date if possible; weekday moves or early in the month can sometimes offer better pricing.

Hydrate and Beat the Heat

Moving day can be physically demanding, and doing it in the heat can increase the risk of dehydration and heat exhaustion. Dress in light, breathable clothing, have plenty of water on hand, and take breaks as needed. If you have pets or small children, make arrangements to keep them cool and safe during the move. Protect Your Belongings

Certain items don’t do well in high temperatures. Electronics, candles, perishable foods, and items like vinyl records or artwork can be damaged if left in a hot vehicle or storage unit. Pack heat-sensitive items separately and transport them in a climate-controlled vehicle if possible.

Take Advantage of the Weather

Unlike winter moves in Alberta, summer typically offers dry roads, making loading and unloading much easier and safer. However, keep an eye on the forecast—thunderstorms can roll in quickly during Alberta summers, so be ready with tarps or plastic sheeting to protect boxes and furniture.

Check Rental Unit Availability and Condition

With many people moving in and out during the summer months, turnover in rental properties can be high. Make sure you schedule a walk-through of your new unit before move-in day to check for cleanliness, functionality of appliances, and any existing damage. Document everything with photos or video to protect your security deposit.

Coordinate With Your Property Manager

If you're renting through a property management company like REMAX Rental Advisors, communicate early and clearly. Confirm your move-in date, inquire about parking or loading zones, and ask if there are any move-in policies or elevator reservations required. The more information you have upfront, the smoother your move will be.
